DSU men’s basketball team planning trip to China for two goodwill games

After its 2010-11 season ends, the Dickinson State men’s basketball team’s year isn’t over.

The Blue Hawks are scheduled to wrap up their year with a week-long trip to China the first week of April to participate in a pair of exhibition goodwill games against Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University in Yangling, a city in the Shaanxi province.

“It’s not set in stone,” Orton said.

That’s because the team is still in the process of finalizing the trip because they have to raise their own funds. Head coach Ty Orton said, so far, $25,000 has been raised through camps, free-throw contests and Blue Hawk Booster Club donations, but that is only about halfway toward the team’s goal. The trip costs about $2,800 per person, Orton said.

“It’s all raised money that’s paying for the trip,” Orton said.

The coach said he hopes everything works out so the team can make the trip.

The Blue Hawks would play games against Northwest A&T on April 3 and 4 and spend the rest of the week touring Chinese universities that have partnerships with DSU — Northwest A&T is an English-speaking university — as well as some sightseeing.

The Blue Hawks officially begin practice on Thursday. They have a scrimmage scheduled against Miles Community College on for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.
