DSU baseball team needs to win Mayville State series

The Dickinson State baseball team needs to win its four-game series at Mayville State on Saturday and Sunday if it wants to reach the Association of Independent Institutions Tournament.

Five of the six teams eligible for the tournament were selected Monday by the AII Baseball Ratings Oversight Committee.

Those schools are Arizona Christian, Cal State-San Marcos, Jamestown College, Mayville State and Thomas (Ga.). The tournament’s final seed will go to either Dickinson State or Dakota State.

The Blue Hawks are 17-16 and took a bit of a hit Tuesday when they dropped a doubleheader at Montana State-Billings. Mayville State is 20-13 and has lost the only two games it has played at home so far this season.

However, a good showing against Mayville State this weekend should be enough to lift the Blue Hawks into the tournament, which begins May 2 in San Marcos, Calif.

The ratings committee hopes to be able to determine the sixth seed by Tuesday, April 17.

DSU has fared quite well this season considering it has not played a home game and may not get to because of the turf instillation that is happening at Southside Municipal Ballpark. The Blue Hawks are scheduled to host a doubleheader against Minot State at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 19. It would be their only home games of the year.
