Turf instillation at Southside nears completion

Here’s an on-field photo of the FieldTurf instillation that was going on Tuesday at Southside Ballpark. The Dickinson High baseball team will be able to play on this in the next couple weeks.

Love it or hate it, the turf has a purpose. First, games can be played on this rain or shine. Second, with no dirt to maintain in the infield, that cuts down the time between doubleheader or tournament games.

The downside is that the entire thing is turf, including the batter’s box and the pitcher’s mound. That could eventually give Dickinson teams a big homefield advantage. But, as Press sports reporter Royal McGregor will point out Thursday in his season preview on the Midgets, the players know that they may struggle to adjust to the change right away.

  1. I was hoping they wouldn’t put the turf mound in. Pitched on one at GF at state legion last summer in the rain, which was extremely difficult as your plant foot slides. Another downside is in the summer it gets very hot, your feet feel like they’re on fire. But it will be nice for the true hops that the infielders will get.
