A look inside Wildcat Pizzeria

I got a first look inside the new Wildcat Pizzeria on March 20 thanks to owner Russell Meads.

What I got out of my impromptu tour after stopping by on my way home for lunch was that the New York-style pizzeria has the potential of being one of the coolest places in Dickinson when it opens April 12 (or sometime around there, Meads said).

Press reporter Katherine Grandstrand featured Wildcat Pizzeria on our Business page Tuesday.

One of the most interesting things Wildcat brings is, as Meads told me, is the pizzeria’s “great ingredients.” Great and interesting is more like it. You’ll be able to build your own pizza with corn, eggplant, many kinds of peppers and different tomatoes.

From all accounts, Meads’ Wildcat location in Williston has been a hit so they must be doing something right.

A native of Cape Cod, Mass., Meads’ restaurant also features New England clam chowder – the East Coast style, not my hometown’s style – Stromboli, nachos and boneless wings.

But, what the people of Dickinson will like most is the full-service bar that includes a patio area in the summer months.

Wildcat Pizzeria also happens to be in the North Park Plaza on the corner of 15th Street West and State Avenue. It’s an area where home building is booming, meaning it should do well in the long term. While it serves pay-by-the-ounce frozen yogurt, it will benefit from having Cherry Berry located in the same building.

I love pizza. Most of us do. And, honestly, Dickinson could use another sit-down pizza place now that Happy Joes is officially gone. Hopefully Wildcat will be able to fill that void.

Making a transition

Hey everybody! Part of my move from sports editor to managing editor at The Dickinson Press is making sure we improve the social media presence we provide to our readership. Part of that includes revamping my blog to reflect my new position.

While I’m still working out the kinks and trying to establish how I want to present everything, I will tell you that I hope to do a few blog posts a week. They could range anywhere from my commentary, to something that may coincide with a story either I or one of The Press’ reporters have written or are working on. I also hope to touch on lighter topics we don’t always cover in the newspaper, such as business openings or little things that are going on in the community. And I’m sure every once in a while, I’ll draw up a sports post. Can’t let that just disappear, can I?

Make sure to keep in touch with me if you have story idea you think The Press should be working on, or if you have a letter to the editor for our Opinion page. And don’t forget to follow my Twitter feed, which you can view by clicking the link on the right side of the page.

Keep watching the blog this week as I try to roll out a few posts.

Stedman’s 30-point games makes her Region 7′s new girls scoring leader

Back-to-back 30-point games has made Beach junior forward Cydni Stedman the new Region 7 scoring leader. Her teammate, junior guard Hailee Farstveet, has held the top spot much of the season. Stedman is averaging 17.6 points per game and Farstveet adds 17.3 for the Buccaneers.

Stedman had 34 points in a win over Heart River on Feb. 7 and scored 31 to help defeat Divide County on Feb. 9. No other girls player in Region 7 has eclipsed 30 points this season. Beach averages 63.4 points per game, nearly 10 points more than Bowman County, who ranks second in the region at 53.8 points per game.

New England junior Gabbi Hanson has helped her team win five of its last six games and is now the No. 3 scorer in the region at 14.6 points per game. The Tigers have the top-ranked scoring defense ahead of Beach. New England is giving just 40.6 points per game while Beach allows 41.1.

DSU’s Steele, Lopez hold on to No. 1 rankings in NAIA North Group

DSU senior wrestlers Brad Steele and Jose Lopez retained their No. 1 rankings in the NAIA North Group on Tuesday despite a weekend in which neither had astounding success.

Steele, a 149-pound senior from Beach, is out with an injury. Lopez, a senior heavyweight from California, lost a critical match to University of Great Falls senior Sears Tiernan, ranked No. 1 in the West Group, in a dual on Friday and only won two matches at DSU’s Tyler Plummer Classic before winning the title after Tiernan injury defaulted.

As a team, DSU is No. 3 in the North Group behind Morningside (Iowa) and Midland (Neb.). Morningside has 182 total team points, Midland has 152 and DSU 130.

DSU junior Bryden Lazaro (125), senior Nestor Ruelas (149), senior Cameron Schrempp (174), and junior Jesse Hellinger (184) and senior Kevin Keisler (197) are all ranked second in the North Group.

The national rankings are released Wednesday.
